Get Cooking Outside This Pancake Day

Pancake day, or shrove Tuesday, is a day that indicates the start of Lent. Lent is the 40 days leading up to Easter were people would traditionally fast. We traditionally eat pancakes on this day as it was the last day before Lent that people could use up items such as eggs and flour before fasting, and making pancakes was perfect for this.

This pancake day why not get out in your van or caravan, or even whip out the BBQ to cook up your pancakes! Make an evening of it with your family and friends! Below we have detailed our favourite pancake recipe to make the most of your Shrove Tuesday.

Ingredients (Makes 8):

  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 300ml semi-skimmed milk
  • 1tbsp of vegetable or sunflower oil

Topping ideas:

  • Lemon
  • Sugar
  • Golden Syrup
  • Chocolate spread
  • Fruit such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries
  • Chocolate
  • Ice Cream

Step 1:

Sift 100 g plain flower into a large mixing bowl

Step 2:

Make a small well in the centre of the flour and crack the eggs into the middle

Step 3:

Slowly add the milk, starting with about 50ml, gently whisking the batter as you go, this should help prevent lumps. Once the flour is whisked in, keep beating until a smooth thick paste is formed

Step 4:

Continue to add a steady stream of milk whilst whisking the batter until it is slightly more runny, resembling a thick single cream

Step 5:

Heat your pan up and pour in a small drizzle of oil

Step 6:

Using a Ladle, pour the batter into the pan whilst tilting the pan to evenly distribute the mixture.

Step 7:

Allow the mixture to cook for about 30 seconds (the downside should have a slight colour)before using a spatula to slowly lift the sides.

Step 8:

Flip the pancake over using the spatula and allow to cook for another 30 seconds before serving the pancake on a plate.

Step 9:

Cover the pancake in your toppings of choice then either fold or roll to serve
