What Size Awning Do I Need? OLPRO Awning Size Guide
The most common question before buying a campervan or caravan awning is simply: will it fit? Campervan and motorhome awnings are mainly sized by the height of your fixing point, while caravan porch awnings also need enough straight awning rail length. Use the calculator below to find your match in under two minutes, then read on for the full measuring guide, connection methods, beginner setup tips and a plain-English breakdown of what all the sizing terms actually mean.
5,000mm waterproofing
All OLPRO awnings use 150D Oxford Polyester rated to 5,000mm hydrostatic head.
Dual 4mm/6mm beading
V2 campervan awnings fit both standard 6mm and narrow 4mm awning rails.
Beginner-friendly setup
Choose inflatable for the least fiddly pitch, or poled for lighter weight and simpler field repairs.
Drive-away freedom
OLPRO awnings are drive-away ready. Leave the awning pitched and take the van out.
Buying your first campervan awning?
Most first-time buyers are not really asking for a size chart. They want to know what connects to the van, what will survive UK weather, whether one person can pitch it, and what has to be packed away at the end of the trip. Use this page to answer those questions before you choose a model.
1. Check the connection height
Measure from the ground to the rail, canopy or connection point. Do not measure the whole vehicle or the roof peak.
2. Identify how it attaches
Awning rail, gutter rail, wind-out canopy or no rail. The calculator matches this to the right drive-away kit.
3. Choose the living space you need
A compact shelter suits couples and short stops. Larger tunnel awnings suit cooking, storage, dogs, children and wet gear.
4. Plan the first pitch
Try a dry run at home, keep pegs and connectors together, and pack it dry before storage whenever possible.
How to measure your fixing height
Your "fixing height" (or connection height) is the single measurement OLPRO needs to match you to the right awning. Here is how to get it right first time.
-
1
Park on level ground
Your van needs to be on a flat surface. Even a slight slope will throw the measurement off by several centimetres, which can push you into the wrong height band.
-
2
Locate your awning rail or connection point
This is the channel, strip or rail along the side of your van or caravan where the awning beading slides in. On most campervans it runs along the roof edge or upper body panel. If you have a gutter rail or wind-out canopy, measure to the point where the awning will physically connect.
-
3
Measure straight down to the ground
Use a tape measure to find the vertical distance from the rail (or connection point) straight down to the ground. This is your fixing height in centimetres. Most standard campervans measure between 190cm and 250cm here.
-
4
Use the higher figure if your van sits nose-down
If your van sits lower at the front than the back (common on older or heavily loaded vans), measure at the rear door end. The awning will be rigged at the higher point, so using the lower nose-down figure risks ordering an awning that hangs too tight to the ground.

For caravans: measure rail height and straight rail length
All touring caravans have an awning rail fitted. Measure from the ground to the rail for height, then measure the straight section of rail where the awning can sit. Long porch awnings do not fit short caravans, so length matters as well as height. You do not need to measure around the curve of the roof for OLPRO awnings (see the A-measurement section below).
OLPRO awning height bands explained
Once you have your fixing height, match it to the table below to see which OLPRO range is right for you.
| Vehicle type | Fixing height | OLPRO range to look at |
|---|---|---|
| Campervan (standard) | 190cm to 250cm | Campervan awnings (Cocoon, Loopo, Uno, Cubo Breeze + poled) |
| Motorhome / tall van | 250cm to 290cm | Motorhome awnings (Cubo Tall Tunnel range) |
| Caravan (6mm rail) | 235cm to 250cm (typical) | Caravan awnings (View Lite 390 range, porch and tunnel style) |
A note on the "A-measurement"
If you have searched for a caravan awning, you may have come across "A sizes" (A8 through A19) and measurements running from 825cm to 1125cm. These refer to the traditional sizing system for full-length caravan awnings made by brands like Isabella and Dorema, where the tape goes over the roof, down around the awning rail channel and back to the ground.
OLPRO does not make full-length caravan awnings. The OLPRO caravan range is lightweight porch and tunnel-style awnings that slide straight into the 6mm awning rail already fitted to your caravan. They are sized by rail height and the straight length of rail available for the awning, not by the A-measurement.
The practical difference: OLPRO porch awnings pitch in around 10 minutes, weigh a fraction of a full awning, and leave you free to move the caravan while the awning stays up. If you specifically need a full-length traditional awning, OLPRO is not the right fit. But if you want a light, quick and weather-resistant shelter alongside your caravan, the OLPRO caravan range is built for that job.
